PLAGUE FEARED.
PRECAUTIONS AT BRISBANE BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COI'YEIGHT. Received 11.5 a.m. to-day. BRISBANE, Dec. 17. When the steamer Eoseric arrived at Townsville from Mexico, it was reported that one of the crow had died from disease rejiorted to be typhus fever, but inquiries showed that probably this was not so. Two rats from the vessel were sent to the Institute of Tropical Medicine, where they were found to contain bacilli resembling those of plague. The chief quarantine officer states that steps are being taken in the direction of safety. The vessel has been anchored out from the wharf pending further investigations.
