PERSONAL ITEMS.
Messrs J. Glim-chouse, Dominion, president of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, and L. iMellvride (general secretary) were in Hawera oil Monday and were, accommodated at the Commercial 1 . Hotel. They left for New Plymouth yesterday morning. Mr and Mrs Smith and Messrs Burns and Slater, of P'etonCj who were retuming to 'Wellington after a motor tour of the province, were guests at the Commercial Hotel on Monday evening. Mr and Mrs E. Gay, of Detroit (U.S.A.) where' Mr Gay is the chief mechanical engineer of the Hupmobile Motor Corporation, paid a brief visit to Hawera. and left for Wellington yesterday. While in Hawera they were guests at the Central Hotel. Messrs C. Miles, Murray Roberts, and Webster, of Wanganui, am visiting Hawera, and are styi.ng at the Central Hotel.
Mr J. F. Kiley, who has for many years been an active member of the South Taranaki Rugby Referees’ Association. was the guest of honour at a gathering of members at Hawera last evening, when, in view iof bis de-parture-to take up residence at . New Plymouth, he was presented with a gold case pencil, suitably elngraved. Mr R. H. Clapbam. who made the presentation on behalf of the association, voiced the esteem in which Mr Kiley is held, and extended wishes for his future happiness.
Jerome Ivlapka Jerome, whose death was. reported by a London cable message to-day, was ‘born at ’Walsall on May 2, 1859, and wins educated in- a London school. He vials in turn a schoolmaster, actor, and clerk. In 1.885 he published “On the Stage and Off,” an account of his theatrical adyentures. but it was “Three Men in a Boat” that really made bis name. In 1892 he isba'tlted with Robert 'Barr ft monthly magazine called “The Idler/’ and Inter he ipubli.shed a weekly, “Today.” As a novelist he m!ade a success in 1902 with “Paul Reiver.” Mr. Jerome retired from journalism, in 1897. He was the author of many widely read novels.
