Mr. land Mrs. Webster, of Auckland, who were staying at the Oommerciai Hotel, left Hawera last night by ear for the north. Sympathy was expressed with Mr. E. Phillips, who recently (suffered a bereavement ,at a meeting of Hie Athletic Club 'last night. Members passed a vote of condolence with Mr. Purllips in the usual manner. Mr. H. B. Gibson left Hawera yesterday for Auckland, eu route to Fiji. Mr. Gibson, Who is accompanied .by Mrs. Gibson and Master Peter Gibson, expects to be absent from New Zealand for about eight weeks. Gratification at the continued ini--provement in health, shown by Mr J. M. Townsend was expressed last night by Dr. McGhie at the Orchestral Society's social to visiting artists. Mr Townsend lias been president of the Orchestral Society for several years and lias been an enthusiastic supporter of its work. Staff Captain Muslin, who before’being accepted as a Salvation Aniiy officer, was employed as tin accountant in Air G. A. Wilkinson’s office at Eltham, has been unpointed chief secretary for India, and has been promoted to the rank of major. He leaves New Zealand with his wife and family in about a month’--?, time. Major Muslin is a brother of Mr C. Muslim, of Eltham, and Mrs Frank Brown, of Hawera. He has a’neadv done two years’ service in India, and has a good knowledge of the people and the Salavtion Army work there.
