EAST COAST RAILWAY
(BY TELEGRAPH-PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GISBORNE, June 1.
Now that the Government has decided to adopt the. coastal route for the railway line between Gisborne and Wairoa, interest exists as to when it is proposed to commence construction. The Minister of Public Works, in an interview, said that he could give no indication as to date, for it depended entirely on how the public money could be allocated.
The suggestion made in Napier recently, that the Government intends 'building a permanent highway in place of the railway, was brought under the notice of the' Minister, • who did, notappear to take the proposal seriously. '.Regarding unemployment, the Minister said that the Government had the situation under review, and it was intended to iswue a statement shortly. LEAGUE OF NATIONS CONFERENCE. CfcLRIST CTL UIiCH, June 1. 'The annual conference of the New Zealand League of Nations Union opened this morning, Dr. A. G. B. Fisher, of Dunedin, presiding. Tie said that in the absence of America and Russia, the league was still imperfect, hut it was going on steadily with instructive work. There was no doubt that recent discussions on technical problems of disarmament had done a great deal of good. The conference is proceeding.
