SOCCER CLUB

Quite a 'number of local Soccer enthusiasts journeyed to New Plymouth to witness the Taranaki versus Canada match. -Strange to say, only one Auroa representative (Freakley) was selected to play for Taranaki, although the local team has held championship honours for some time and is as yet undefeated in the present competition. On Saturday they once more met and defeated Hawera by 3 goals to 2. The Hall Committee held their first euchre party and dance on Tuesday, when Mrs Bigham and Mr G. Barlow won the prizes. CHILDREN'S FANCY DRESS BALL.

The Auroa School Committee were unfortunate with the weather for their children’s fancy dress ball, but in spite of this fact a very successful function was held, the majority of local families braving the elements to attend. O n D a sprinkling of people from the surrounding townships patronised the ball, although, had the weather been line, quite a number more intended to be present at this popular function. The ladies’ committee had spared no pains in assisting -the school committee to make the ball a complete success. The hall was artistically decorated with school colours (maroon and black) by the young ladies, under Mrs Barlow’s supervision, while the supper provided all the delicacies that appealed to the appetites of both young and old. The children’s dancing began shortly after 7 p.m., and the opening grand march displayed a very interesting variety of fancy costumes. At -least one hundred children were sporting their gorgeous or ingenious attire, and it was indeed a pleasing scene. After several juvenile dances had passed, the judging of the various classes for prizes place. Mr and Mrs C. Mrs West supplied the music for the children’s session, and Coburn’s orchestra continued for the adult dances. Messrs J. and G. Bigham and E. Davison acted as M.C'.’s throughout the evening. Extras were played by Miss O’Dea and Mr Coxhead. The school committee and staff are greatly indebted to the ladies and gentlemen of .the district who so loyally assisted them in training the children for the dances and assisting throughout the evening in the work of carrying on the ball to a successful conclusion.
