A SAD STORY
AN OLD MAN’S DEATH
J R AGEDY REVEALED AT INQUEST,
(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, June 1. An inquest was held to-day regarding the death of Joseph 'Samuel Lucas, agecl 76, who was found dead at his residence at Hataitai on May 23, with his wife critically ill beside, him, from the effects of gas poisoning. A -sad story was revealed. The couple wa.s devoted to one. another. The evidence pointed to the deceased, who had no sense of smell, having inadvertently turned on the gas oven gas tap. which is close to a jet used for boiling water. His wife had been suffering from caiairrh, and had remained in bed Tor several days. The evidence also, showed that there were no exhaust pipes for fumes from the stove and Police feergeanit Fender suggested that such should be compulsory for all gas ranges. A verdict was returned that death was due to a.n accidental ©scape of gas.
