JERSEY BREEDERS.
CRITICISM OF COUNCIL
A BREEZE IN THE ANNUAL MEETING.
Several members supported Mr S. J. Bennett at the annual meeting of Jersey breeders yesterday in a protest against the action of the council in appointing two members to help to select Jersey herd: for the Council of Agriculture." He moved that the resolution be rescinded so as to allow the appointment to be made at the meeting. The chairman refused to accept the motion.
Mr Lepper endorsed l Mr Bennett’s suggestion" and said 1 it was premature for the old council to make the appointment. Mr H. C. Sampson considered the chairman’s action high-handed, but the latter, said he had no alternative but to refuse to let the matter be reopened, as the question had been finally settled.
Messrs D. O’Sullivan and P. J. Petersen both agreed that the council bad taken too much responsibility, and Mr O’Sullivan said it should be careful not to repeat the error made in the ease of Ruakura. Mr Bennett said the executive had taken on too much responsibility. Irecause if the appointed men made a wrong selection they would inmir the displeasure of the members. The latter should have made the annointment and so taken the responsibility. Mr Dermer said the appointment had been made by a council elected by members, and they were content to he responsible. He considered it would not he right to make the appointment now, because the bulk of the breeders present were from New Plymouth. Mr McCay (Hawera) suggested the discussion was premature, and that breeders would have a chance later to discuss it before the committee had a chance of functioning. Mr Bennett asked why the council bad not deferred the matter, seeing it bad received the letter only the previous dav. The discussion was then closed by the chairman.
