In the House of Commons Mr Lan-s----bury moved an amendment to omit a sub-section to clause 6 of the Trades Union Bill, making it unlawful for a public authority to make it it condition of employment tliiait a, person -should be a. trade unionist.
Mr Neville Chamberlain pointed out that the clause enforced absolute neutrality upon public authorities and that membership of -a trade union was no guarantee of efficiency. ; The amendment was negatived by 294 vote® to 116. The Attorney-General, Sir Douglas Hogg, then moved a -sub-section making it illegal for any -local authority to include in a clause in the contract_ that person® employed -in connection with, a contract -should or should not he trade unionist®. This was carried.
