CABLE CHARGES

PLEASANT SURPRISE. REDUCTIONS ANNOUNCED AS FROM NEXT MONTH. 8Y GABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRJGH: Received 11.15 a.m. to-day. LONDON, Jan. 27. Simultaneous announcements of reductions in tlie cable rates on both the Eastern and Pacific routes came in the nature of a most pleasant surprise .. Originally the Pacific Gable Board intended introducing, on January 1, a complete new tariff, but this was delayed owing to the British Post Office requiring further consideration of its proportion of the cut. The whole thing was hung up till January 24, when the Post Office intimated its acquiescence and informed the Commonwealth according. Australia’s approval was recived only this afternoon ..lyid the reduction was instantly announced. It is understood that the Pacific Gable Board and the Eastern Company recently conferred on the date from which the reduction is houl d be operated. March I was first suggested, but .the Pacific Board, in view of the previous delay, preferred February 1. It is understood that reductions in the rates from the United States to Australia will shortly be arranged and then the whole of the new tariff will be in force on all-red route.
