NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “ Maecenas.”) The fields promise to be large for the opening day (Saturday) of the Taka' puna .Jockey Club. Mint Leaf carried his big weight to victory in attractive style at the recent Wellington meeting, but he apjjears to be a “moody” customer. Prior to coming north for the recent meeting at Trcntham, Silver Coot ran three furlongs in a fraction over 34 seconds, but ran so poorly on the first appearance that he was allowed to pay a great dividend on Saturday. Lysander will not contest the Taranaki Stakes, but Mr Currie will start The Thorn in that event. Usually Reremoana is well placed over the early stages of a race, but at Trentham last Monday this gelding was actually Jast six furlongs from home. Trainer Jamison’s pair of two-year-olds, High Finance and Ti Tree, were unlucky in their Wellington engagements, but being well should pay their way in the future. Melissa showed brilliancy at Trontham, but on each occasion met something just too good. Melissa is certain to pay her way. The New Plymouth trainer, E. George, had his, team very well at the Wellington meeting, but did not secure the wins his work deserved.

Mimetic was backed with confidence in his races at the recent Wellington meeting, but it was clearly demonstrated there that Comedy King’s son has a will of his own.

Inferno gave an exhibition of bad temper each day of the recent Wellington meeting, and it is almost certain that he will be barried from racing in f;d ure.

Bn or to being sent to Trentham, Orazorc showed up well in a fast gallop with that smart youngster Silvermine. Ciazone was reserved for the last day uf the meeting, and after giving the leaders a big start over the last furlong just failed to beat Aston for second place. Decoy Bird ran good races at Trenthtm, and is one worth remembering when the company to he met is not so ‘‘classy.’’ There were some big winners over the success of Vesperus in the Douro Cup, but a fafr amount of the money was lost when Vesperus w-as beaten into third place last Monday. With just ordianry luck the backers of Vesperus must have again collected, but interference at the critical stage lost him some lengths and the race. After having every chance in the Consolation Handicap at Trentham and looking a likely winner a furlong from home, Mandane stopped badly to run fourth, and evidently is not right. The Irish-bred Aston ran two excellent races at the recent Wellington meeting, and only lack of condition kept him out of -winning positions. A little later Aston will hold his oivn in better company. The two-year-old Laity, whd showed •pace to run third at the recent Wellington meeting, was sold to an Australian buyer for 400 guineas. Hynanna has always been noted for consistent form. After being well back over the initial stages of the Wellington Cup, ho finished a good fifth. On the third day of the meeting Hynanna showed his worth by simply playing with the opposition in the Consolation Handicap. That Stormy is a good one he showed on each of the three days at the recent Wellington meeting. On the opening day Stormy carried 8.5 to win very easily" over seven furlongs in 1.27 J. The second day he was most unlucky to lose the Douro Cup under 9.9, the mile being run in 1.41. And on the third day Stormy registered a great performance by running a close fourth carrying 9.13 in a mile Tun in 1.39, and this after slipping and losing fifty yards at barrier rise.

Carrying 9.8, Grand Knight was very unlucky in the Summer Handicap at Trentham on Monday last. Well placed entering the last furlong, the rider of the English-bred horse tried to go through on the inside, but got badly stopped. Grand Knight had to be pulled back, which cost him about fpur lengths. He put in a fine run, but was unable to get closer than half a length to Centrepiece and First Acre.
