RUGBY LEAGUE.
TROUBLES OF THE TEAM. STATEMENT BY THE! CAPTAIN. BY CABLE— PBESS ASSOCIATION—t.OFSEIGHT. SYDNEY, Jan. 25. - Mr. Avery, captain of the New Zealand League football team, in a farewell statement in- the Athletic News, exonerates Mr. Mait* from bliamo for the regrettable troubles of the team. He ,says: “Had the players supported Mr. Mail* and also- had Mr. Mail* been given freedom to control the whole team, his management would have been very .successful. I unhesitatingly say that Mr. Miaiir -did net exceed his legitimate managerial functions. On the contrary, in face of unprecedented difficulties, he did his utmost to uphold his position, though on delicate ground. I believe the council was remiss in not adequately supporting Messrs Ponder and Mail* in their efforts to be managers. In reality, I consider their attitude towards the tactions of the ,suspended players was fully warranted.”
