THE CHURCH AND REFORM

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —It would have reflected greater credit on “Seneca Simplex” if he had kept to the subject of Church and reform, and had .not asked us questions which do not refer to. the subject' in one iota. We are not going to answer his first three questions; but-the fourth one calls for correction. If he will take the trouble to have, another look at, our letter he will find that- we made .no reference to the fact that the , Church has been instrumental in civilising the Eastern countries. What jve said was that the Church was doing her best to combine Christianity with the civilisation of these countries. “Veritas” also is in error in his reading of our letter. He said that we backed out of our statement re the leaders in the abolition of the slave trade. We did in the case of Lincoln, but not Wi’lberforce Wilberforee (if you will take the trouble to consult i any authentic history) you will find . was a churchgoer and a great believer in the Church. In regard to the argument of “Veritas” that Germany wae not solely responsible for the war, he rambles on, about some post-war literature, but fails,, to quote a single authority except the words of Mr. Lloyd George. We would refer him to the Lielniowsky Memoirs. Prince Liehnowsky was: the German Ambassador in London when the war broke out. Lichnowsky blames Germany, and Germany alone, for the world Avar. And Herr Maximilian Harden, writing in his paper Zukunft, stated that “No impartial court could condemn Lichnowsky, whose memorandum contains no essential statement aiid no main* idea" which can be contradicted.” This is all that calls for answer,'.Mr. Editor; and, ®o far as we are concerned, the correspondence has ended. Thanking you for allowing us to use so much of your valuable space,—We are, etc,, TWO CHRISTIAN WORKERS. HaAA'era, Sept. 14.
