At Cambridge (Massachusetts) lour hundred of the world’s leading philosopher’s and teachers of philosophy hare gathered at the first in ternational meeting since the war. j. Many of the .speahers expressed the v\ conviction that philosophy could bring ' the minds of the various nations together on a. plane which would bridge the ordinary distrusts and rivalries and which offered a path, to understanding and amity. The meeting is being held in Harvard University and includes representatives from England, brace, Germany, Italy, India. Turkey, Japan and China. I>r. Butler, president of Columbia University, in welcoming the delegates said : * ‘We welcome those scholars in philosophy who speak the German toneme.” ' A, great burst- of applause interrupted Dr. Butler, who .continued: “This congress is -in the spirit of Locarno. Philosophy speaks no single 'language. It speaks -the language of the classics- and it -speaks the languages of all modern nations, and it is now learning the language of the Orient. Now the day has come for philosophy, not ns something -apart _ from life, hut as something guiding lilo to the fulfilment of its inirpose.”
