SUNNY OHAWE.

HAWERA’S BEACH SUBURB

IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITIES.

Popular on account of its accessibility, Ohawe, .the seaside resort of the Hawera district, has for the past f seasons proved an increasing source o± attraction during the summer ? when the lure of the breakers and long reaching beaches is felt by all sections of the community. The Ohawe beach is within easy travelling distance of the Hawera district, only live miles of first-class highway separating it from the town, and, over many miles of coastline, it is the only place where wheeled traffic can practically reach the sea. On the undulating fields which reach to the cliffs, a settlement comprising some eighty summer residences afford evidence of the growth of what is rapidly becoming an suburb of the Each season finds these dwellings occupied by a : happy community of district residents, while on holiday occasions? appear thTongs of visitors eager to exploit the opportunity offered for healthy recreation. * The popularity of the resort among those attracted by the prospect of life at the seaside is indicated by the keen demand which has been experienced for building property, all excepting four of sixty sections, subdivided in 1920 from a 20-a'cre reserve and offered for building purposes by the Education Department, having been taken up.

EXPLOITING ATTRACTIONS,

In 1920 a society was formed for the purpose of effecting improvements at the 'beach, providing for the convenience of visitors and attending to general matters affecting the welfare of the settlement. Since its inception the society has accomplished a great deal of exceedingly useful work, and has been responsible for the collection and expenditure of approximately £2OO for bringing about desired improvements. The sum of £SO, subscribed by Ohawe residents for the formation of the road leading to the beach approach, was subsidised to a similar extent by the Hawera County Council, .which also undertook the work. As the result of tho society’s efforts, dressing sheds with shower baths have been erected, lifesaving apparatus has been provided, seats placed for the convenience of visitors, and paTts of the beach approach levelled and grassed, to mention but a few of the activities of its members.

The programme of work in preparation for the coming season includes the enlargement .of the dressing sheds to double the previous dimensions' and the provision of further conveniences. Already much of the work has been carried out, in connection with which tho society wishes to acknowledge donations of timber and other material. Much, however, remains to be done before the society Can complete the work contemplated. Among other requirements, roofing iron, to the value of approximately £l2, -will foe needed, together with cement for flooring and finishing timber. The endeavour., to render the resort as pleasurable as possible is being fostered by the public spirited society members who, apart from the satisfaction of having assisted in affording certain measures of enjoyment for the public, reap no reward for their services. Their aims will appeal to all sections who enjoy the beach privileges, and the society would appreciate the notification to the president - (Mr S. J. Outran) or other committee members, of any assistance which may foe given.
