DISASTROUS FLOODS
IN NORTHERN JAPAN.
WORST FOR FORTY YEARS.
THOUSANDS OF HOMES AFFECTED

TOKIO, Aug. 5
The heaviest rains for thirty years have resulted in disastrous floods in Northern Japan. The rivers are overflowing and damaging thousands of acres of rice fields and farm lands, inundating thousands of houses, especially in the Akita Prefecture. The railway services are interrupted in several places. It is believed there have been heavy casualties, but the numbers are not yet known. The floods are the wmrst in forty years. They have destroyed 4000 homes in Akita Prefecture, wiped out thousands of acres of crops, and cut the railway communications. The town of Honjo, at the mouth of the Furuyuki River, was doubly flooded, the river overflowing and the gale driving the sea into the harbour. The entire town of 13,000 inhabitants was deep in swirling ivatcrs. The casualties are not yet knoivn, but arc heavy.
