It is understood that the gatesi at the Kaavarau Falls, near the exit of Lake Wiakatipu, which have been in the course of erection for some considerable time, are now nearing completion. The Minister of Public .Works states that the 'Government has decided not to allow the gates of the dam! to he closed or the .clam to be otherwise used unless and until at is satisfied that the conditions of tjie‘ license have been adequately fulfilled. A pleasant entertainment is promised' at the Returned Soldiers’ Club at Hawera this evening, when one. of the periodical socials arranged by the social committee is to be held l . The organiser (Mr IT. Briggs) has drawn up an attractive programme of musical items, which with mixed billiard tourneys. card games, and l dancing should combine' in providing an occasion replete with enjoyment. The function is a. public one, and a! cordial invitation is extended to all interested.

The' new wireless station at- Auckland' opened last evening at 10.30 with a aeries of tests. The first test consisted of piano scale notes, but these were reproduced badly. A pianola was played in the second test and this instrument came through with remarkable clearness and 1 volume. After a few moments a (talk was given on timber, but this was solely for the benefit of the engineers. A local listener closed down a;b 11 jpjin. and at that time the station was performing very well indeed and everything promises favourably for the .future. IYA .operate on 420 metres and cones in just above Adelaide. Members of the Manaia bra. eh of the Farmers’ Union and all other residents are reminded of the annual social and presentation of prizes to Ibe held in. the Oddfellows’ Hull. The presentation includes prizes for the branch root-growing comperition.s as well as the Boys’ and Girls’ Club. The committee, under the direction of the hon. secretary (Mr. ,T. F. Glague), has made spec Lai arrangements for an interesting programme. To-morrow the Scottish Society’s is holding a shop day in aid of the Pipe Band expenses, in the shop next to Morrissey’s Mart. In view of the good object for which the day is held, the committee will be pleased to receive any contributions! and will be glad of all support possible from the people of the town and district.

- The committee for the Tawliiti Halil novelty hall, to be held to-niglit (Friday), has. gone to a lot of trouble in arranging for the enjoyment of all who attend. It is giving good prizes for the waltzing competitions which have been arranged and expects a strong entry. Floor, music and supper will be of the best-.
