FRENCH GENERAL’S PRAISE
“THEY WERE UNSURPASSED.”
LONDON, July 20. General Gouraud, the Military Governor of Paris, who lias been visiting London, in an interview before he left for Paris, said: “Two hours ago 1 lunched with the King and Queen at .Buckingham Palace. The Queen asked for the circumstances in which I lost my right' arm and smashed my leg. and I took the opportunity to tell them my opinion of the Anzaes. I said they were unsurpassed. They held l on to the heights of Gallipoli as tigers would hold on to the roof of a cage with their cl aws. ’ ’
Asked if he contemplated visiting Australia to renew his acquaintance with the Anzaes, General Gouraud' replied: “That is one of my greatest desires,” hut, emphasising the remark with an emotional gesture of his left arm, hey added. “How can I hope to face such an expensive and: long journey when the franc is only worth a. penny? I wish 1 could!” “I can. still see General Birdwood’s famous Anzaes crouching like tiger cats, with strong claws andi teeth, on the summit at Gaba. Tepe,” said General Gouraud, when replying to the toast of his health, at the AngloFrench Luncheon Club.
