LONG HOURS.

HARDSHIPS OF CONTROL

(By Te'egi-itph.—Special to Star), WELLINGTON, Aug. 5. Nearly four hours of discussion, on the short title of the Dairy Control Bill in committee of the House of Representatives came to a climax with a keen argument as to whether progress had been made, because Mr Holland. Leader of the Opposition, considered an adjournment at 3 o’clock in the morning should not bo repeated in the following sitting. The hours of rising last week averaged, he said. 1.30 a.m. It could not he said that any do’ay had. be<in caused to legislation and a, lot had yet to be done, but the hours were unduly prolonged. Mr G. W. Forbes. Nationalist leader, supported the protest, declaring that Parliament had a considerable achievement in the way of work, and the Government must take the ,responsibility for its- methods. Members could only leave it to the Minister’s humanitarian instincts. (Laughter). “We certainly have been getting it a, bit rough in the matter of hours,” remarked Mr Ye itch, who advised the Prime Minister to adjourn after passing the ijrst clause. The Hon. AY. Nosworthy protested against a long discussion about something which was not in the Bill. Mr H. E. Holland moved to report progress about 11.30 p.m., Mr F. F. Hock'ey, Chairman of Committees, ftt first refusing to accept the motion, on the ground that no progress had been made. However, it Was demonstrated that occasionally there had been progress, and the motion went to ft division, being negatived by 50 votes to 21.

Discussion resumed exactly in line with the pnavoius day’s talk, hut it quickly ceased, and the first contentious clause, No. 4, dealing with the method of representation;, was reached within, fifteen minutes.
