Private advice received at Wellington from Sydney reports the death of Mr. J. Allies, who for nearly 60 years was valuer and returning officer for the Wellington City Council. He only retired on March 25, and left for Sydney on June 11 to obtain the benefit of the milder cliihate. He was born in Sydney, and was brought as an infant to New Zealand in 1840. He leaves two sons and a daughter.— Press Association.

Mr. J. -P. Kalaugher, secretary of the New Zealand Friesian Association, will be iii Haivera this week for the show,, and is expected to arrive on Wednesday. He will give a series' of. iecturettes and demonstrations during the Show week. The Governor-designate- of Victoria, Lord Somers, has arrived at Melbourne. He was officially welcomed -by the- Premier andt members of the- Cabinet and- sworn in -at Parliament House.

By last night’s express Mr. R Darrocli, secretary and organiser of the Navy League in New Zealand, arrived in Haivera to assist in the opening ceremonies of the Week for the Empire. Mr, Darroch has taken a very live interest in the Navy -League- for some years. • He has been- associated with educational matters all his life, and is now head of one of the largest schools m Wellington. While in Haivera he will talk to the school chib dren on the subject of the Navy and Imperial interests gtenerafily. Mr. Darroch is, during his visit to Haivera, the guest of Mr. C. G. Trotter.
