The ceremony was attended by several survivors of the landing (including Captain Carpenter, of the Vindictive), Belgian authorities, and the Duke of Northumberland, One noteworthy person present was Mrs Gibbs, mother of Commander Gibbs, of the Iris, who remained at his post although both legs were blown off by a German shell.
