POSITION IN PALMERSTON NORTH. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON N., June 28. A conference of local bodies was held this morning, the Mayor presiding, to consider the unemployment position. It was reported by a Labour Department officer that the department had on its books 190 men, with 276 deKn dents, seeking work. Of that numr 22 were in distressed circumstampes. The general opinion was expressed that most of the men were local residents. The Mayor explained that the Borough Council was raising £6OOO under the provisions of the relief work legislation to employ 20 extra, men, which would bring the council’s total on relief work up to 55. The Power Board would take six or seven more on, but had nearly completed its constructional work. Other local bodies represented did not hold out much prospect of being able to assist in the matter, and the conference concluded with 'an appeal by the Mayor to local bodies to retain as many of their present employees as possible.
