POSTMASTER-GENERAL’S EXPLANATION. BY CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBIGHT Received 11.40 a.m. to-day, MELBOURNE, June 19. In the House of Representatives, in' reply to a, question whether penny postage could he inaugurated to coincide with the opening of Canberra, the Postmaster-General (the Hon. W. ,G. Gibson) said that the 'impracticability of this- being done would he seen when he mentioned that since he came into office new awards had added £1,000,000 to tho department’s wage's hill. Ho said that if Australia’s telephone charges were the, /me as were made by private companies in the United States, the revenue to the department would 1 be three millions greater than now.
