HORSES AND TRAINERS. Everything possible to foster the interests of the harness sport is being done by the Hawera Trotting Club, and the liberal stakes offered have attracted the acceptance of some of the best of the Dominion trotters for the meeting on Saturday and Monday next. A notable visitor will be Peterwah, an importation from America, which is oonsxLer-ed on© of i/lio <irtrisix>oria*t>s ot straight trotters, and which is to appear at the Exhibition meeting at Dunedin. Peterwali arrived in Hawera by last evening’s train, aoompanied by All Hell and Betty Moko. Other trainers expected to arrive today with their charges are Tom Rowe, G. Rogers. W. Whitten, T. H, Lloyd, and Sid August. Appreciatingfully the quality of the outside trotters which will be competing, ]ocal trainers are hard at work in the endeavour to ensure that their nominees will be in the best possible condition. Since taking up his new quarters, Phil Green has hit the front on a good inanv occasions, and merits congratulation on the attention given to the horses under his care. The same uuav also- be said of the voung aspirant A. ,J. Corrigan and his associate, J. Bullock, whose charges have been given the benefit of careful preparation, as lias been evidenced by the good condition in which they have been sent to the post. Lance Goodger is another good trotman. Although not particularly successful of late, lie lias show ll unquestioned ability and will receive deserved eon grata alt ions when success comes his way. . Sam Smith also, who trams at i\orniainby, has some useful youngsters in work, and may he relied upon to make it good showing on the track.

(Notes by “Maecenas.”) That the sport of trotting is increasing in public favour is shown by the large attendance at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting, held at Lower Hutt on Saturday. But for the fact that the day was somewhat cold, the elub may have established a record. In view of the near approach of the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting (on Saturday and Monday next), it is worthy of note that several aeceptQrs for that meeting performed well on Saturday last. All Bout, who liaiis from the Nelson district, was a few pounds better favourite than the Christchurch trained Wee Gus for the Improvers’, but while Wee Gus failed to strike a gait and took no part in the 'contest), All Four went out well and, after pacing a great race, only_wcnt down in the last fifty yards to the Hutt-owned Steel Wire, a gelding that will pay his way. All Four should be kept in mind for future engagements. The Beach Handicap fell to Shine Soon, an inmate of M. Edwards’ wellknown stable, the connections of which fully participated in the good dividend returned. Zolock Palm wag the only runner better backed than Shine Soon, but strong support was forthcoming for Ariki, Denver Wood and Pearl Coronado. Shine Soon only just bent another Canterbury representative in Direct Tod. '

Old Hardy Grattan proved that lie is far from a back number by -beating some useful performers in the squaregaited contest for the Kaitokc Handicap. Fancy Pr'outo, from the successful Tomkinson stable,, was a big favourite. but never did her work right. Molly Audubon, who has engagements at the Hawera meeting, went a fair-race into second place, and a similar remark applies to Some Jazz, who finished third.

The chief event, the Armstrong Handicap of £SOO, provided a tine contest.! The winner, Cardinal Logan, was the actual favourite, but Judge Hancock and Becky Logan each carried within a few pounds of figure, and Native Chief was also heavily supported. The favourite went out remarkably well, but Native Chief and Talent both mixed their gait for a time. Over the early stages All Bell paced into second place, while the trotter Judge Hancock flattered his army of backers. Pacing well, and admirably handled by that past- master, A. Heudrieksen, Cardinal Logan led all the way to beat Becky Logan by three lengths, while Doctor Dillon, with a

fine late run, just beat the tiring Judge Hancock.

Firpo started a good favourite for the Members’ Handicap, His Pal being the only other starter seriously supported. Giving his best exhibition to date, Firpo began well and at the end of two furlongs was just in behind the leader, Cora Tacks. With half a mile to go August took Firpo to the front, and lie won very easily from Bona, who paced really Well over the final stages, but was asked to make up too much leeway. Shine Soon was third and Cora Tacks fourth. The Wellington High Class Trot of £4OO gave Wellingtonians some idea of the thrills of a good square-gaited contest. That splendid and brilliant trotter Peterwah was a good favourite, while Master Audo and the promising Betty Moko were next in order of favouritism. All the starters went off well from the bell, Bonny Spec being the early leader from Master Audo, while Peterwah had made up his 48. yards in an amazing manner and, at the end of three furlongs, was one of the leaders. At the end of six furlongs Master Audo took charge from Bonny Spec, Peterwah and Betty Moko. There was little change till five furlongs from home. Here Peterwah went to go. to the lead, but went to a break, losing many lengths. Bonny Spec had a useful lead over Betty Moko with two furlongs to go, and Peterwah again looked a possibility, but again broke up. Once in a line for the judge, Bonny Spec looked good, but Betty Moko, trotting splendidly, only failed by a neck to reach Bonny Spec. The Logan Pointer gelding Yoicka, driven by E. McDermott, carried twice the amount invested on Denver Wood and Kibringi (evenly supported) for the Belmont Handicap. Zolock Palm and Bold Bill also liad good followings. Lady Ballin, Golden Morn, Peter Elect and Sparkling Chimes comprised. the leading division over most of the journey, but in the last half-mile Zolock Palm and Van Rich paced well and. ■after a good race, filled the leading places. The favourite did not settle down until all chance was gone; then he gave a fine exhibition and was unluckv.

A" meeting that should do much to popularise the light harness sport in Wellington closed with the Recovery Handicap, for which event All Bell was a better favourite than the trotter Peterwah, with Talent also well supported. The straight-out trotter Peterwah began with amazing brilliancy and led over the early stages from Fashion Queen and All Bell. The last-named then led for a brief period, after which Talent took .charge. Talent was just in front of All Bell turning into the straight, with Peterwah less than a length away, but just when the trotter looked like winning he went to a break, and Talent beat All Bell by a length, while Golden Devon just beat Peterwah.
