WELLINGTON RACES

SECOND DAY’S EVENTS. THE RACING DESCRIBED (By Telegraph—Special to* Star.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 22. The morning broke bright with visions of a very hot day for the middle day of the Wellington meeting, but just before racing started it clouded over, eventually there was rain, which cooled the air much to the pleasure of a big crowd. Speculation was very brisk. WON BY INCHES. Of the* six runners for the Mungaroa Handicap E*n Route claimed most support- with The Tank, Kilorum and KAI- - evenly supported. Son o’ Mine was the early leader from. The Tank and En, Route, but going up the 'back •stretch Ma.tu pushed to lead Son o’ Mine and ’Em Route. Three furlongs from home Ivillburu moved up and was just in front of Son o’ Mine* when turning from home. Over the final •stages a great struggle took place between Son o ’Mine and Kilburn, L. Morris just winning by inches from Son o’ Mine. The Tank, whose rider lost- a; stirrup, was a- good third. HONOURS DIVIDED. . Class was not a strong feature amongst starters in r.he Trial Plate. When the tote closed We.stbroke was favourite from Tiumadice and Danae. When the barrier rase Cornstalk was quickest to begin, and right into the straight the leading division/ was Cornstalk,' Plain Sailing, Sa-sham, Westbroke and Desert Knight. Over the last furlong Cornstalk -tired and in a. great finish Plain Sailing and "Westbrake were placed a dead heat, with Corn.stalk third. MARTULLA ’S WJN. (Despite the good showing of Alartulla in the cup, Phoenix Park was preferred by backers in the January "Welter, Marti! I.la and Royal Diadem following in that order. When the barrier rose Agitato, Father O’Flynn and Prinifcemps began best, and at the end of a furlong Agitato was attended by Printemp.s, Riouex and Blonde. Racing into the straight Blonde led from Agitato, Rouex and Father O’Flynn. Over the last furlong Phoenix Park, on the rails, and Mantulla ,wide out, came fast and in a good finish Alartulla beat Father O’Flynn by a good head, with Phoenix Park a good third and Tresha-m fourth. A FA.YOU RITE’S WIN. Lady Desmond was a decided favourite* for the Nursery Handicap, from Paper Boy and the bracket (Note and Spode). Lady Desmond again played up before the start, but eventually jumped out smartly to lead EEthein and Battlement on to the course* proper. Galloping generously. Lady Desmond ran on well to beat Elithem by a couple of lengths, with Note and Paper Boy close up. ANOTHER* CLOSE! CALL, The rich Racing Club Handicap drew only eight starters, of which the* bra.ckebted pair, Star Stranger and Star Ranger carried £3500, best* supported of others being Enthusiasm and Listening Post. From an excellent despatch* the order passing the stand was Star Ranger, Fool’s Paradise, Star tSranger, and Listening Post. There* was little alteration of the leading division till six furlongs from home. Here Star Ranger led Fool’s Paradise by three lengths, while* at close intervals wore* Star Stranger. Elnthuisia.s.m, and Listening Post. When well in the straight Star Stranger threw out a •strong challenge, hut vigorously ridden by young Eastwood Star Ranger hung on long enough* to just beat Star Stranger, on which R, Reed was just a little ' over confident. Listening Post was an indifferent third, but may do bettor on Saturday. Fool’s Paradise was fourth. INVESTORS RIGHT AGAIN. There was a* very big pool on the Douro Ouj) and when betting on the event finished Kilbronsyth was a pronounced favourite from Polyphemus Wristlet and My Hobby. Diogenes, o'reum. Kilmiss and Ivilbronsytli. Serenade was still, in charge when racing into the straight, with Anklet, Diogenes, Kilmiss, and Polyphemus following. At the distance post Serenade compounded and Diogenes ran in over the last hundred yards and cut out Kilbronsyth, but
