NURSERYMEN’S CONFERENCE.

MANY REMITS PASSED. FORESTRY EXHIBIT AT HAWERA. SHOW. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) I)GNEDIN, .Tan. 21. The nineteenth annual conference of the New Zealand Association of Nurserymen was concluded to-day. The retiring president (Mr. .1. D. Lonnie; occupied the chair. “That this association congratulates Sir Alexander Roberts on his knight hood and expresses its sincere appreciation on the work done by him as commissioner from New Zealand at YYoni bley,” was a resolution carried by acclamation. It was decided that it be a recommendation to all employers’ unions in the association to take every step possible to enroll all nurserymen in the union so that joint action may be taken where necessary. It was decided that members of the Nurserymen’s Association at the conference guarantee not to break the terms laid down for trading between the members and others. The motion was adopted to endeavour to prevent unfair advertising and ether forms of ‘ 1 cutting. ’ ’ Mr. James Allen moved that the conference heartily endorse the efforts now being made by the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture to give to those in the business a recognised status; and that this conference places on record its appreciation of the Institute of Her ticulture. especially the work in connection with hoiticultural education, plant nomenclature and plant improvement. The motion was carried.

Mr. Y. 0. Davies (New Plymouth; moved: “Tlmt the Taranaki council respecfullv draws attention to the success which has attended the combined forestry exhibit shown the last two years at the Hawera winter show, and suggests that form of co-operation as one of the most effective means of educating the public and of combating unfair competition.’’ The motion was carried. Mr. Lonnie moved: “That this council supports the attitude taken up by the Dominion executive with reference to State competition against private enterprise, and urges that efforts be continued to secure a termination of the State’s activities in this direction. The motion was carried without di; c ussion.

The following remit was also a doped : “That the conference bring bof jiT the Government the fact that the competition of the Forestry Service in growing and suplving trees for private planting leads to economic waste and to the injury of a pre-existing industry. The co-operation of the State Forest Service, whereby the organised nursery industry could have supplied all the trees for private planting and possibly for tlie State also, would have been a more economic procedure and would be in the best interests of the Dominion.” Tlio reports of the citrus, rose and other committees were read, and d.seussion took place with reference to diseased imported bulbs, it generally being agreed that hot water treatment was mosl effective.
