Prill.4o LIBRARY. (From Our Own -Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Waimate West. Public Library committee, .was held at Manaia on Tuesday evening. There were present Messrs I . A. Bridge (chairman), Poynter, W. Vincent and J. A. Cosgrove. Apologies were received from Messrs. J. Scanned. B. Badland and W. Snowden. As the meeting was the last, prior to the annual meeting, which will be held on February 2, the annual report, and balance-sheet were submitted for approval. The report .stated that the year which had just closed had proved most successful, the number of subscribers being well maintained. The ,subscriptions had amounted to £BB 16s Id, as against £B2 Is 4d during the previous year. Two hundred and sixty books were added to the shelves, of which 280 were bought and 80 donated by Mr. A. (J. Bennett, whose interest in the library was very highly appreciated. Much advantage is taken bv the public of the newspaper .section, but very little financial assistance was secured from the contribution box. A sub-committee which had waited on the County Council had secured an increase in the subsidy from £5 to £7 10s and the Town Board subsidy still remained at £2l). The sum available from the Meuli bequest had not been expended. In the transfer of Mr. G. T. Smith from 'Manaia the library lost an efficient secretary. Mr. H. D. Smith held the position for a while and later Mr. Forrester Avas elected. The balance-isheet shoAved a creditbalance of £l2 17s 2d after the paying of accounts. Alt a well attended meeting of the Waimate District Hibernian Sports’ committee held last evening it was decided to hold the annual sports on Saturday March 6. An extensive programme comprising running, cycling, and Highland events was submitted, which included the North Island three miles’ cycle championship. 100 yards North Island championship, and Taranaki cycling derby, open to all riders under 21 years of age. .V strong Avorking committee was appointed to put the track in order. 'Hie first meeting of this committee Avill he on Saturday. January 30, at noon. It Avas resolved that D. McLennan. New Zealand sprint champion,-be asked to compete at the sports.
