MRS. T. H. ROY. There has passed away in the person of Mrs. T. H. Toy, of Argyle Street, Hawera. the surviving, head of a family well known in Hawera, South Taranaiii, and Nelson, and a. link with the early history of Nelson. The late Mrs. Foy was born in mid-Atlantic on a voyage to New Zealand, she being a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wimsett, 'whose family were wellknown in Nelson. She married the late Mr. T. H. Foy, and resided in Nelson till 1890, when the family moved to Waverley. Three years later a move was made to Hawera, and lor over 32 years the deceased lady was a resident of this town, Mr. Foy predeceasing his wife six years ago. Both sides of the house were strongly attached to the Methodist Church. Mrs. Foy’s father was a class leader before he left the Old Country. He landed in Nelson from the George Fife in 1842, and at once identified himself with church work. He built the first Methodist Sunday school, of raupo, on the banks of the Maitai river, and was a class leader up to the time of his removal to the North Island nearly half a century later. He also erected T and occupied the first brick house in Nelson, and built the first Methodist church at Motueka. His son and daughter-in-law followed in his footsteps, and Mrs. Foy was always a leader in those departments of church activity which the women make more particularly their own. She was from shortly after her arrival in Hawera till her death a sacramental steward for the Hawera Methodist Church, and there are many in Hawera who can testify to the sincerity and truly Christian spirit which was characteristic of Mrs. Foy’s life and work.
