SEAMEN’S STRIKE.
THE LOYAL OFFICERS. The most gratifying feature of the seamen’s strike was the loyal attitude of the officers. This the public take as a matter of course, and no doubt it was so to the officers themselves, but, sievertheless, a warm acknowledgment is due to them in regard to their attitude, says the Shipping Gazette' editorially. It must be remembered that the officers themselves were under retrenchment, losing more than the men •on account of their emoluments being higher, and that as a class taking its seriously they are actually worse off. Whilst seamen can spend pounds and pounds upon themselves, one never hears of mercantile officers doing so; they think of the little lady at the other end without calling upon the public to consider her sufferings. It would be a pity that tlie loyalty of the officers should pass unnoticed. On the other hand, it would be a great thing if it were accorded some tangible ■acknowledgment. The question is up to the farmers, and there need be no (difficulty as to what might most suitably and acceptably be done. We believe that the mercantile officers have an institute at Liverpool, also an orphanage. To say more would suggest that the farmers need to be urged to <lo the gracious and sporting thing. This we are assured will not he the case once the matter has been brought to their notice.
