HONOUR THE PIONEERS.
SOLDIERS’ GRAVES. MEMORIAL CEREMONY. A movement is on foot to do honour to the men who fell at Otapawa sixty years ago, and also those who fell at other engagements. Mr Scott, Government inspector, was in the district last week and inspected, in company with Mr Finlay, the cairn at Ohawe, and: also the cemetery and memorials at Normanby. He was concerned that there was no adequate fence and gate to protect the cairn erected by the late James Livingston. He urged that this should he done, and said that the Department would help if a committee was formed to carry out the scheme. This is now being arranged, and as a preliminary a public meeting will he he’d on Friday evening at Hawera, convened by the Mayor and the County Chairman. It is hoped to see a large gathering, for everyone, should take a live interest in the movement. The suggestion is to have the work done at Ohawe, for which the Government will find the money, and unveil thi s on January 13, the sixtieth anniversary of Ofcapawa.
