NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By “Maecenas.”) When at Waikato recently Trainer J. O’Neill secured a near relative to Tuki from that gelding’s breeder, Mr R. Hannon. It is stated that Muraahi was> recently priced, but the value set on Campfire’s son. (1000 guineas) was considered too high. Bright Day was a very unlucky gelding not to gain place money at the Waikato meeting. .His legs got badly knocked about during his race, and he will want a short spell. lie may race in these parts during the holidays. As Reremoana is now set to carry welter weights in ordinary handicaps it may mean that, his trainer will race the gelding in weight-for-age events in future. Taranaki stables always supply a good number, of runners for race meetings 1 held by the Feilding Jockey Club, and judging from the acceptances for the coming meeting of this club our stables will again be well represented. Seeing that Rafa was placed on the schooling list it is surprising that La Revo has escaped official notice so long. This mare was particularly bad at the Canterbury meeting. On her best behaviour La Reve is more troublesome than, Rafa. When out in front in the Makomako Hack at the Levin meeting on Saturday last, Argue ran wide and lost all chance thereby. Although he only beat th© hurdler Askari by a short neck in the Levin Cup, Euphonium won by sheer gamencss.

Despite her 9.6, Waetea was unlucky not to 1 have won the Levin Cup on Saturday last. As Waetea has little chance in a good handicap field when carrying the minimum, it clearly demonstrates what class stands for. Papaponga went well for five furlongs at Ashhurst, so by the time the holiday meetings arrive the black gelding will be at his best. Argue showed pace at Waverley last month, and at Ashhurst was even more brilliant. On the form shown so far, Argue looks certain to win races during the holidays. After returning from Riccartoiq Te Kara was turned out, and the gelding’s owner states that Te Kara is practically a certain non-starter in the coming Auckland Cup.

Backers of Benzora were very unlucky not to collect a dividend l at Ashhurst last Wednesday. With ordinary luck the daughter of Bisogne must have won easily. Trainer C. Jackson had more than his share of bad luck at the Ashhurst meeting, as Benzora, well nigh a. certainty, was beaten, for the Maiden, and had Shut Eye jumped out at all well in the Poliangina Handicap he must h ave won.

Of late the stipendiary stewards have had 1 several riders penalised for crossing too soon. The latest offender is C. Butler, who was suspended for 14 days at Levin. It is a difficult matter to secure conclusive evidence from a jockey at an enquiry. In fact, it is a waste of 1 innin most instances asking “boys” to give evidence if it is expected to incriminate tlieir brother riders. At Levin last Saturday, W. 11. Jones was fined £5 for giving unsatisfactory evidence in connection with Ashhuist running.

Since going to tiie Auckland province, Trainer J. T. Jamieson has gained some rich patrons, who have not spared money in tlie search for good racehorses, and at present, the trainer named has a. number of fashionably bred horses, but up to the present none of these are quite as good as thenbreeding would suggest or their owners would wish. That Jamieson is experiencing bad luck is shown by the fact that Windbag was bought by a patron of his stable, and afterwards sold at a loss and only a few months ago this trainer secured Commendation, only to pass him on.
