A crater 100 yards in diameter, which swallowed buildings, machineiy, and vehicles, was formed near DuisburcT (in the Ruhr area), where the main shaft of the Kaitiel coal mine subshied recently. ' , . Apparently the wa.'l of the shalt was not strong enough to support the water collected behind it and caved in, and a river of mud swept through the mine. The mine had recently been entirely fitted with modern machinery, which has never been used. This is now buried under thousands of tons or earth. . . Fortunately only six men were in t.m mine at the time. When the burst occurred they were hurled hark some i-irdfi. hut they were ah e to save themselves.
