FISTIC FIGHTS

END VIOLENT SCENES. IN TRENCH CHAMBER RESIGNATION OF GOVERNMENT. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Nov. 24, 11.15 a.m. PARIS, Nov. 23. Violent scenes preceded the resignation of the Government. Bokarowski, the Opposition’s finance expert, declared that M. Painieve’s plan to consolidate the short term debt would bludgeon French credit to death. M Painieve’s supporters rose and screa rued ‘ • Traitor. ’ ’ M Painleve declared that the statement was murderous. The final vote was taken amidst uproarious confusion, the deputies shouting challenges and banging the desks. When M. Painleve and bis Ministers rose and went out, indicating resignation, their supporters /shouted; '“Long jlive the Republic,” while the Opposition indulged in derisive laughter.

The uproar culminated in numerous bouts of fisticuffs.— Sydney Sun Cable. THE NEXT PREMIER INTERESTING POSSIBILITIES. (Received Nov. 24, 11.20 a.m.) PARIS. Nov. 23.

M. Briaud is in indifferent health, rendering physical exertion difficult, so his succession to the Premiership is unlikely, though he is anxious to continue the Foreign Secretaryship and complete the Locarno Treaty. Other possibilities are that M. Painleve may form a Ministry independent of Socialists, relying instead upon the Centre Party; or M. Dowmer may form a ’ Government from the Left parties. M. Caillaux’s hour has not yet struck. —A. and N.Z. Assn.

CHAOTIC SITUATION POLITICS IN FRANCE. WHO WILL RE NEXT PREMIER? PARIS, Nov. 22. The political situation is full of chaos and uncertainty. M. Painleve, r.fter handing his resignation to the President (M. Doumergue) said: “The Republic continues, and we shall defend it with all our might. If there are any who think their hour has struck they are wrong.” M. Doumerge accepted the Cabinet’s resignation. A sharp exchange of unparliamentary epithets occurred between the Rightists and Leftists when the Government left the Chamber, which adjourned ti 1 ! Tuesday.

M. Briaud (Minister for Foreign Affairs in the late Cabinet) is mentioned as a nossible successor to M. Painleve. The Government’s resignation im r mediately succeeded a series of excited party conferences, which made little headway beyond revealing tlie desire of the Leftists to persuade the Socialists to accept portfolios and thus restore the .Cartellist regime. The Socialists heretofoTe had not reached a decision. They may have to com-ene a national congress to determine their course of action.

The financial situation is too critical to admit delay and, regardless of the Cabinet position, M. Painleve on Monday will submit an emergency measure, authorising the Bank of France to advance a. milliard and a half francs to meet immediate needs.
