THE BUTTER MARKET.

UPWARD TREND. HIGH PRICE AT HOME. PROBABLE RISE IN DOMINION. The latest, advices from Home showed a strong upward trend, a considerable rise having taken place during the last week, when the price advanced from tSSs to 1945, the latest cpiotation received. Early in June, when prices were, at 165 s per cwt., the market began to harden, and as the northern summer advanced prices advanced with it. There was a slight, check a fortnight ago, but this was recovered last week, when the market was quoted at 188 s to 190 s. Since then there has been a further advance of 4s to 194 s per cwt., at which figure, the market is reported firm. This quotation is equal to about Is fid to Is 64d per lb f.o.b. Sales of factory’ outputs are reported for the period to October 31 up to Is 7cl) per lb.

This condition seems to foreshadow a rise in retail prices in the Dominion. There have, been two increases' of Id each during the last week or two. The secretary of the Control Board said in Wellington on Wednesday that “the local market is bare of supplies, and the shipments at the end of this season will be, small. There will be very little to send out till the end of August. ’ ’ The prospects for the dairy companies for the early part of the season are distinctly good. The reports and records given are distinctly good news to the dairy farmer,, but not such pleasant reading for the householders. The price of butter is expected l to increase to Is lid retail, and probably cheese will advance also. The lirese.nt retail prices are Is lOd for best butter and Is Id and Is 2d for best- cheese. Local merchants state that they expect an increase any day.

It is interesting to learn in this connection that advices by letter from Scotland noted the- fact that six weeks ago best butter was selling there- at Is lid and 2s.

The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency, Ltd., report as follow’s from London, dated 23rd imst.:—Butter.—i New Zealand choicest salted 194 s to 1965, choicest un-salted 194 s to 198 s. Cheese. —1080 to 110 s.
