NEW SCHOOL ADVOCATED.

FOR TURUTURU DISTRICT. A meeting of householders in the Turuturu district for the purpose of discussing tne best manner of petition- ,„«• the Education Department for a school to he opened there was held last night. Notwithstanding the unfavourable weather conditions, there was a fair attendance. . Mr A. K. Fysou was elected chairman, and in opening the meeting he said lie had been in communication with Mr J. W. Harding, chairman of the Hawera School Committee. Mr. Harding had offered to do his best to ) the residents to obtain a school, and had said he understood that the previous petition which had been forwarded to the Education Department had not been definitely turned down, but .merely deferred. If that was so t here would lie no need to take another peition. The Taranaki Education Board •was in favour bf the establishment of school, but had thought that tlie time had been inopportune to apply to the Department for a grant. Sir James Parr (Minister of Education), in only to Mr J. R. Corrigan, had expressed his sympathy at the suggestion of a school, hut had said that it would he impossible to make a grant at the present time. The matter had then been- dropped. It •as agreed to form a committee of al. l the member s present, and that a letter be sent to the Education Board advising that a meeting had been held.: and that it was agreed, in view of the large .number of residents, that a school was necessary. Mr ’A. Thompson was appointed secretary.

An executive committee, consisting of Messr s A. J. Corrigan, D. Stevenson and A. K. Fyson, was set up. The various streets in the district were allotted to members of the general committee to canvass for signatures to a petition and obtain the names of all the children who would use the school. It was decided that a fortnight should be allowed - for this work, and that a meeting should then be called to discuss what the next- step should he. It was stated that there were several suitable sites available. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Watkins for all her work in. the nast. and for organising the present meeting. . .
