A man giving the name of Tom Watson, boarding at a shop in King Street, fatally shot- Mrs Merl Shelton, a waitress at the establishment. He then shot himself and died shortly afterwards. Among the man’s effects were found Avar medals and a union member’s ticket bearing the name of T. Weathered. / DUTY OX MUTTON BIRDS. HOBART. July 15. Flinders Islands mutton bird packers are gravely perturbed at the action of the New Zealand Comptroller of Customs in classifying birds as preserved meat, instead of as provisions, as formerly. This will mean an additional 40'per cent., approximately 16s 8d per hundred birds, which, it is stated, will absolutely block Tasmanian importations to New Zealand.
