THEFT OF PENNIES.
TELEPHONES TAMPERED WITH. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, July 9. John Muir appeared at the court charged with stealing twelve thousand pennies from slot telephones. The evidence of detectives was that the accused wa s seen loitering about the telephone booths at the Post Office. It- had been suspected that tampering was going on, as the records showed that the receipts had diminished. . A watch wa s kept on Muir, and when arrested lie admitted obtaining £SO by manipulating the machines. He pleaded guilty, and was committed toi the Supreme Court lor sentence.
