NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By M aecenas.) Father O’FJynn was slightly on the “big side” when saddled up to race on Tuesday at Trentham, and want of a race cost him the prize. In Olympia Trainer Harry Hickey has got a useful sort that, having plenty of size, may turn out very useful later on.

Athough only able to run third, Nine of Spades did well on Tuesday last, and one is safe in forecasting a better day for this gelding.

Penury Rose simply made an exhibition of the field in the Trentham Hurdles on Tuesday, and on the showing should certainly run well in races ahead.

Lucullent showed a lot of pace for a mile and a h«lf on Tuesday, and if a runner for hack hurdle honours on later clays may show up well. Blue Peter showed pace for eix furlongs of the Te Aro Handicap, but the heavy going tired him. and his finishing effort was weak. Yoma was the unlucky runner of the Stewards’ Handicap at Trentham, for after going a furlong lie was at the tail of a strung-out field, and then finished close to the placed division. Lady Fingers showed a lot of pace for five furlongs, but over the concluding stages tired very badly on Tuesday.

As it has rained again since Tuesday’s racing. there is no prospect of the race track at Trentham being any better for the remaining days of this meeting. Frenchman came'to Trentham with a great reputation as a jumper of “country.” but his exhibition there, to say the least, was far from good. Windermere was galloping and jumping well oil Tuesday, when lie “dipped” a little at a simple brush fence, and the rider, with the spirit of the day. fell off.

Although beaten into fourth place, Rohutai ran a splendid race in the Stewards’ Handicap on Tuesday, and with an ounce of luck the grey mare would have paid a dividend.

In fine weather the race track at Trentham is possibly the fastest in the Dominion, but when well sodden with rain the same course is one of the slowest. The course at Trentham on Tuesday was very hard on horses, and it wa.s impossible to imagine horses more tired when finishing than those that raced on that day. Some were simply walking, as the times show. It was given out that Trespass could not act in such “going” as that of Trentham on Tuesday, but the. Australian gelding went: better than the majority, and if more vigorously ridden than on Tuesday Trespass may win a race ere long. Considering liis load (11.4). a lot of use was made of Income on Tuesday, and just after lie looked likely to struggle on and pay a dividend he weakened, to finish sixth. J’be connections of Alario were very sanguine about the gelding’s prospects on Tuesday, and but for getting a bad bump and losing bis position Alaric appeared certain to have paid a dividend in the event.

Alany Colours and Genera] Carrington ton both wen I good races on Tuesday, but the weight on such a track tired thorn. Many Colours may impiyive on tiie race, but General Carrington appears to he getting stale.

G’onidle made suoh an exhibition of his field on the opening day at Trentham thal he should again show an well at the meeting, although a good rise of weight in such ground brings a horse back to bis field. Oniahu won the AYe-Hingt.on Steeplechase in good style, but his task wars made much more simple by reason of the fact that Eerie was very badly bandied, her rider being at her to force the pace fully twelve Curbings from home. This error of judgment on the nart of Henderson also brought about the downfall of the liard-milMiig Black Art. which Akin McDonald could not restrain. FouaJv patiently handled, both Eerie and Black Art may have beaten Omahu.

COUNTRY CLUBS. RUST NESS AT ANNUAL MEETING. WELLINGTON, July 8. At the conference of delegates of count ry r.'cino- eluhs. Mr \Y. Jewell presiding, disappointment in respect to the allocation of the extra racing permits was expressed in the annual report. A 'deputation to the Minister

was suggested, asking for a reduction of taxation in cases where clubs were struggling to make ends meet. Increased privileges were advocated b.v Air D. Evans, who moved that the Minister be thanked for the promised reduction of taxation and that in the interests of sport the Government be urged to return to the pre-war railway tariff for the transport of racing and trolling horses, to permit moneys to he telegraphed for investment on the totalisator, to remove the restriction on the publication of dividends and to permit where clubs desire it the reiritreduction of the double, tota lisa-tor. Olivers wore elected as follow: President Mr \Y. Jewell; vice-presi-dent, Me I). ,J. Evans; executive, Messrs J Kennedy. F. C. Roche, E. R. Neale (South Island), Hon. E. AY. , Alison. Messrs W. A. Lyon. A. Bruce (North Island). Regarding anomalies between the treatment of metropolitan and country racing clubs, a discussion took place, and it was decided to make a formal protest at the Racing Conference todav.
