FUSION FAILURE
INSUPERABLE DIFFICULTIES: * LIBERALS REACH THE LIMIT. PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT SOON. (By Telegraph—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, July 9. Contrary to members’ expectations, the Prime Minister (Air Coates) did not announce the failure of the fusion negotiations to-day, but members of both parties made no secret of the fact that the matter is ended. The Liberal leader had written to the Prime Minister in the week-end requesting an early decision, and it is understood that some further difficulties in the way were then enumerated. These having been answered, the Liberal leader is stated to have received a communication from Mr Coates which shows that, jn the opinion of the Reform Party, the difficulties which remain are practically insuperable. The Liberals hold that they have been more than generous in concessions, and. nothing more could be expected of them. No more suggestions will come from the Liberals, so it is stated, therefore the public will, at an early da.te, be acquainted with what has been discussed privately for so long by the politicians, who will leave them to judge who is mainly responsible for the failure to bring the parties into line.
