GISBORNE. July S. • Every year after the closing down of the freezing works there is an influx of labour to the various waterfronts of the Dominion, and in Gisborne this influx is being experienced at the present time. The natural result is that those men who rely all the year round on wharf work liow find that some of the work which would in the ordinary course be theirs is going to these new members. Because of this the local union approached the Employers’ Federation with the request that the number of members of the union be limited. The union contends that there is insufficient work offering at present for those permanently engaged on the wharf, and that no more should he allowed into the union. The local branch of the Shipowners’ .Federation decided to consult headquarters as to the position.
