WAR IN MOROCCO
RIFF INVASION. FRENCH INTENTIONS. DEFENDING HER OWN. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received May 12, 9 a.m. . LONDON, May 11. The Times Paris corespondent .says that, following a Cabinet discussion on the Moroccan situation, the Prime Minister (M. Painleve) made a statement that “the Riffs would soon discover their mistake of penetrating into the French line s as one of the greatest importance. This Riff movement, which was no longer a mere infiltration for the object of pillage, but a real invasion aimed at" forcing us to evacuate territories as far as Fez, should be suppressed with the utmost energy.” M. Painleve emphasised that it was also important that France’s intentions should be clearly understood abroad. There was no question of a war of conquest; France was purely and simply defending her own interests. Not only was she remaining within the limits of the Moroccan mandate but she was acting in complete accord, ance with the Anglo-Spanish agreement. —Times.
