(Received May 12, 9 a.m.) PEKING, May 11. A report from Shanghai states that a houseboat with two Britishers, Messrs Lawson Hall and Walker, and with their wives and children aboard, were returning to the harbour from a pleasure trip just before nightfall. When nearing a Chinese gunboat the latter suddenly, and without warning, fired a fusilade at the houseboat with rifle fire. Mr Lawson Hall was wounded in the thigh. The British Consul-General hag entered a strong protest. He was informed that the shooting was the outcome of the crew on the. gunboat becoming panic-stricken owing to the warning of an impending attack by an opposing faction. —Reuter.
