(From Our Own Correspondent.) SUCCESSFUL FAIR. Splendid weather, a thronged hall, and an outstanding success m every wuiy rewarded tire efforts of trbe ladies of the district, witio for several, months paisa have been making quiet preparations for the Church of England fair, Which, came off tot-day (Fin day). The following were in charge of stalls, and all reported doing excellent .business: Plain and fancy goods: Mesdames Macke, Eaves and Hastie, Bran tub.: Mesdames Buxton and B. Nicholas. Produce stall: Mr. and ]Vsns. Whitooanbe and Mr. Lyndon. Hoopla: Mesdames P'ettigrew and Swainson and Miss Le Fleming. Cake stall: Mists Duff and Miss Muggendge. Sweet ,stall: Mrs. Le Cbmpe,' Miss Hall and Mrs. H. Hartley. Fruit salad: Miss Johnstone, Mists Muggeridge, Miss Le Fleming, Miss Lyndon and Miss K. Muggeridge. Supper room: Mrs. Lyndon, Mrs. Dunn, Mrs. Dillard, Mrs. Buxton, Mrs. Deegan, Mrs. West, Mns. Mace, Mrs. Davidson, Mrs. French. The fair was opened at 1 o’clock, and from then on- till later in the evening the various stall-holders were worked to . their utmost. capacity. The decorations of the various stalls were most attractive. Among those that drew particular attention was the fruit salad stall, which, was decora, ted _in Japanese fashion, the holders being dressed to suit. A unique feature of the afternoon’s proceedings, at least so far las Auroa was concerned, was a baby .show. For this there were two classes, one for babies under one yeqr, .and the other for those between one and two.. For the first class there were five entries and eight I'o.r the latter. _ Baby Haworth secured the boys’ prize in' the younger class and Baby Brown tied for girls’ prize in the same class. Tn the older class Baby Mace was the winner of the boys’ section, and another Baby Brown was first among the girls. Dr. Hoekin, of Kaponga, was judge, and he was exceedingly complimentary to Auroa babies.

During the evening various competitions were run. Among the promoters of these I noticed genial Jack Lyndon, who was running a candle lighting competition, mainly a finger-burning business, to judge by the celerity with which many of the competitors parted with their matches. Alf Smart won by lighting 23 candles with one match. Another competition which, excited peals of laughter was the spectacle, of some poor deluded men folk arraying themselves in female attire (or trying to) in record time. Any married man could have told them that dressing hurriedly in ladies’ hat, blouse and skirt was foredoomed to- failure; it cian’ti be done. Mr. CL Rye was declared the winner of this, but the less said of his appearance when lie was “dressed” the better.

' The whole affair was most capably organised, and a -special, word of praise is due to the joint secretaries, Mesdames Johnstone and Hast-ie. I understand about £IOO gross was raised. Needless to say, those concerned are more than pleased at such an excellent result.
