The business is being carried on for the benefit of the shareholders. Mr. J. C. Gould, who is an e>A memher of the House of Commons niu| governing director of the company, has had a remarkable career. He is the son, of a. working man. He went to South Africa as an ordinary seaman, but left the ship there and worked as a clerk. He then went to the United States, where he was employed successively as a labourer- and an insurance clerk. Mr. Gould studied insurance and became the bead of the largest New York marine re-insurance company. He established in, 1908. a ro-insurance firm in, London, with, branches throughout tbe Continent. W'hen the war ruined re-insurance lie became a, shinbroker .and shipowner. Through bis knowledge of the Continent,ail reinsurance ramifications he revealed how Germany was learning -shipping movements from this source. The company is the victim of the world ,slump and continued shinning depression.
