THE grand THEATRE

“THE BRASS BOWL

Edmund Lowe, the newest- screen star will he seen in the second of his now* series of starring pictures under the banner of William Fox at the Grand Theatre to-night. It is none ■other than “The Brass Bowl,” an adaptation of Louis Joseph Vance’s great novel. In “The Brass Bowl” the star has especially brilliant support. Claire Adams is said to ingratiate herself as the leading lady, while J. Farfell MacDonald, Leo White, Fred Butler and Jack Duffy all give excellent performances in the various supporting roles. The supports include Fox News, Fox Topical and a very amusing comedy entitled “A Nip o’ Scotch.”

OPER.A HOUSE’—TO-NIOHT. “WANDERER OF THE WASTEN LAND.”

To-night sees the opening of Zane Grey’s * 4 Wanderer of the Wasteland.” This visualisation of Zane Grey’s romance, filmed in colours in and about Death Valley, California,, is of unusual significance. It is the most interesting step away from the usual black and white photography. This film, done by the Techni-eo.loui- process, pro. vides many dazzling camera shots, notably one of the characters with a background of drifting sands and blue skies. The actual story is as follows: Adam Larey, a young pioneer prospector, becomes involved in a fight with Iris ne’er-do-well brother and accidentally kills him, or so it seems at the moment. Larey fiee.s into the desert, has many narrow escapes and finally comes to live with an old miner. Still believing himself to he a. hunted man, he pushes on to California, where he finds the girl he has loved, and decides to g|o back and face the authorities. But he discovers that his brother is still alive. Jack Holt, Billie Dove, and Noah Beery have the leading roles. It is a Paramount special production and ran a long season at “The De Luxe Theatre,” Wellington. The box plan is as usual.

RIVER LEA PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL

Reports received concerning preparations being made indicate that an exceptionally enjoyable entertainment may be anticipated at the Riverlea ha-11 on Thursday evening next, when the first plain and fancy clress masquerade ball of the season is to be held. Dancers from all parts of the district are evincing interest in. the event and a comprehensive variety of costumes, ensuring keen competition for the trophies ottered, should he seen. Featured in the programme will be waltzing and novelty dance competitions, the winners of which will receive handsome mementos of their success. Special decorations designed to afford a setting for carnival spirit which will prevail will add greatly to the general attractions, while the music, floor and .gup per appointments may be depended upon to maintain the excellent standard for which Riverlea functions are noted,
