PRINCESS OF THE ARAWAS.
THE LATE MRS. JOHN WALDEN. The late Moni Whakapnu, lietter known as Mrs. John Walden, whose death occurred at Normanby last Thursday night, after a lingering illness, was a daughter of the late Hone Whakapau, a descendant of - Tewaka, who was known as one of the greatest chiefs of the Araukuku tribe. Her mother, the late Kotuawheraro Makere, being a descendant of the Arawa tribe. —of Rangitiki, head of the tribe, and Tengarahn, .the greatest chief of the same tribe —enabled the late Mrs. Walden to claim the right to he named “a Princess of the Arawa tribe.”
The great respect in which the deceased lady was held by all residents, Maori and' pakeha alike, was evident in the great crowd that attended her. funeral on . Sunday' afternoon. The service was conducted by Monsignor Power, and the remains were laid to rest in the old Matapo cemetery, the coffin having been carried from the house bv a party of European bearers. A husband, s'ix children, and one grandchild are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving wife and mother.
