Wedding March, Piton, Bowman, Lord Thurnham, Iviki, Kingsmock, Miss June. Lady Yarco. 7.0. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas). .H. Gray was responsible for a display of fine horsemanship when he won on Genera! Pryde at Avondale. Had the rider of Bright Sol not “gone to sleep” on that gelding at Avondale, he must have beaten General Pryde. Bright Sol was not sound last year, and was spelled, having only ,'bssen taken up since Christmas. He was backed with confidence by his connections on the opening day at Avondale. Rafa did not begin wc.l on the opening day at Avondale, and thereafter ran in the rear. He looked well, and should not be discarded on account of his recent failures. Black Cruiser, formerly trained by H. Rayner at Waverley, is now in F. Looinb’s stable at Te Awamutu. Black Cruiser ran wed on the opening day at Avondale.

The Wellington sportsman, Mr AY. Higgins, recently bought Lucius, and that gelding carried his colours into second place at Avondale. King Pat, a gelding by Heather Mixture—Elvsian Rose, showed a lot of speed in his first outing at the Avondale meeting. He is worth remembering lor future events. 1 When sent out to contest the All Aged Stakes at Avondale, the muchboomed northerner Merry Damon looked well. He was just in behind Oration at the straight entrance, but faded badly over the lost furlong. Te Monamii was a runner in the Maiden Plate at Avondale. He was practically last over the ear\y stages of the race, but finished in such a. manner that an early win for Te Monamii looks, assured. The hurdle competitors seen out at the Avondale meeting, with a couple cf exceptions, were, a poor class, as shown by the easy manner in which Highway won with 11.7. The two full brothers, Gala. Day and Boomerclav, were each successful" on the opening day of the Avondale meeting. Each started favourite for their respective races, and both won well, which suggests further successes for them.

Although defeated on each day at Riecarton, Pilliewinkie is possibly the be.st .handicap performer over a. distance at present in this Dominion. With a little help from his rider, Pilliewinkie, with all his 9.12, may have won the Great Autumn.

Taking everything into consideration, Reremoana was responsible for g fine performance in the All Aged Shakes at Avondale. He began remarkably well with his load of 9.10, and after going a couple, of furlongs he was within three lengths of Oration, and going well. From that point till the straight entrance Roy Reed allowed Reremoana to lose a winning chance. That R. J. Mason was not very confident about the prospects of Chignon and Nincompoop' in the Champagne Stakes at Riecarton is shown by the fact that he saved a couple of pounds with Trainer T. F. Quinlan, who duly won the evedt- with Black Cat.

Since joining lu George’s team, Oration lias made great improvement, and his performance in the All Aged Stakes at the Avondale meeting was not only his best to date, hut was quite high class. Oration may not develop as a great stayer, hut he may. take high honours over short distance racing. That Tania tote .is going back fast is reflected by the poor races the son of Absurd has run at Awapuni, EUerslip, and Avondale during the last month. Although getting weight from Reremoana and Deluge, both were much better supported than Tamateto, which was paying over the “limit.” The running proved the public opinion to be correct,.as both Reremoana and Deluge heat Tam ate te.

The Australian-bred Cawnporo was responsible for a really good performance in the first division of the Chevalier Welter at Avondale. When racing in a winning position turning /or home, Cawiipore was badly interfered with bv another competitor, and lost four lengths, hut putting in a mighty run over the Inst hundred yards, tlawnpore just got up to win. This gelding will win good races in the future. To any close observer, Reremoana had an “odds on” chance after two furlongs had been run, of winning the All Aged Stakes at Avondale, as ho was close to Oration and Merry Damon, and wn c going easily. However, his rider allowed him to drop hack sevorn 1> ngt hs in the run to the straight, and then Reremoana ran out very wide at the turn, a most unusual happening with one of Roy Reed’s mounts. Over the - last furlong Reremoana put in •> great run. and although he gained many lengths, he was not equal t/> giving such an absurd start to a speedy F.wo-vcar-old like Oration.
