BURSTING OF A DAM.
THE GREENOCK DISASTER.
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, April 20.
The bursting of the reservoir bank at Skelmorlil, near Greenock, which resulted in the death 6f four children and a woman, was due to the carrying awav of thirty feet of the dam in consequence of torrential rains raising the level of the water in the reservoir until the danger point was reached. Fortunately the bulk of the water invaded the roadway, thus missing many houses. Not a vestige of one house remained after the deluge passed. Three children playing outside were killed, one body being carried over, gardens and roads to the. sea, where it was found half buried in the sand. A motor-bus full of passengers ran into the flood, but managed to turn and get clear in time.
