Gorge. 11 saved him from a drop of 150 ft to the rocks below. All the while a howling nor'-wester tore through the opening, battering the unfortunate man with broken pieces of rock and ejtones. The strength of the wind ioan be gauged from the fact that it lifted! his new Dodge car into the air a.nrl threw it on its side. against the edge of the cutting. The mishap occurred on Saturday morning when Jessep was motoring down the cutting into Rakaia.. When the oar toppled! Jessep was da.ught in, a vortex, which threw him .against the chain guard. He attempted to. get tp his feet, but the gale was too -strong, and he was compelled to cling to the chain: until- the winds moderated. The whole of one side of the car was mtteci and dented bv stones, and if. looked as if emery paper bad been rubbed over the enamel. The hood of the ea.r was torn, away, and has. not yet been found. Broken lamps and windscreen help to fill the bill for repairs. Fortunately the engine was undamaged, .and Jessep was able to get the ea.r right and proceed slowly to Ashburton.
