BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT,
Received March 19, 9.5 a.m. LONDON, March IS. The Imperial. Economic Committee held its first meeting with the Board of Trade. Sir P. Cunliffe Lister, in welcoming representatives from all. parts of the Empire, emphasised the importance of the development of Imperial resources and mutual trade. He promised that the Government would •to its utmost assist, the work of the committee. Sir E J. Mackinder, replying, emphasised’ the terms of reference. He indicated that the chief competitor with which the committee- was concerned was the- foreign food supplier, not the home producer in Britain, ihe committee, therefore, would endeavour to secure that foodstuffs for Britain came, as far as possible, from within the Empire. Tlie- committee was an experiment in Empire co-operation, nob an attempt at Empire government. The future development of the Empire, both in trade and constitution, lay in the application of the principle oi cooperation.—Reuter.
