MORE BRITISH THAN EVER. The Bishop of Gloucester’s fear that, on the present basis of natural .increase, the English-speaking population of Canada will be supplanted by the French is declared by the Toronto Globe to be unfounded. The paper quotes the census statistics, showing that the increase of population iii, the ten years to 1921 was 45.68 per cent. English, as against 25.28 per cent. French. Another set of figures shows' that the British increased in 10 years by 25 per cent., as against the French bv 19 per cent. The Globe is confident that the English-speaking proportion will be maintained through immigration, while the French Canadian is recruited only from the cradle. It adds: “British Canadians are losing ground in Quebec and outside the cities, and French Canadans are doing most of the pioneering in the part of Northern Ontario equally open to other Canadians, but Canada as a whole has become pi ore British and not less. And there are a multitude of Canadians of British birth and descent who see nothing alarming or inimical in a corresponding numerical growth of their fellowCanadians of French descent, their partners in the building up of this great Dominion.”
